These babies are playful, affectionate, sporty, fearless, and loveable.
Although Cavaliers are born to be companions, they are sporty in nature. If they aren’t sitting on a lap or getting a belly rub, they’ll be outside chasing birds or butterflies. They are perfect for outside playing, hiking, running on the beach and sports such as agility, rally, flyball and fetch. These dogs do quite well with children and other animals. As always, teach your child the appropriate way to approach and handle any dog. Cavaliers are extremely gentle and loving dogs and do tend let little children bully them if children are not properly monitored around them. When introduced at an early age, Cavaliers do exceptional well with cats. We had a Maine Coon cat indoors with our two Cavaliers and they all got along quite well. They do enjoy the occasional game of chase, whether it be the cat chasing the dog or the dog chasing the cat. They are also really good with other dogs. Since this breed loves everyone and everything they meet, they often cannot tell the difference in dogs that are friendly and dogs that aren't, so it’s always wise to be cautious when introducing your new pup to your other dogs.
Since they are companion dogs, Cavaliers get attached quite quickly to their owners, which doesn’t make it ideal for them to be left alone for long periods of time. They are perfect for apartment or condo living. Although they do exceptionally well indoors, daily walks and outdoor play time are crucial to get their exercise time in. Walks on a leash or a fenced in play area are a must since they do not have street smarts and will run right out in front of a car if a birds or bee catches their attention. Because they are short-nosed breeds, avoid long walks in the heat of the day and never leave your Cavalier out in the yard on a hot day without access to shade and cool, fresh water. Their lifespan can be anywhere from 9-15 years.
Females will reach around 13 - 15 lbs. Males will be around 18-20 lbs.
