Cavaliers are fairly easy to maintain when it comes to grooming needs. You need to comb or brush them three to four times a week and bathe them only as necessary. The feathered hair on the ears, legs and tail grow long and tend to get tangled and knotted, so check often for mats that need to be gently combed out.Cavalier are about average when it comes to shedding.

Although not absolutely necessary, often you will see owners trim their Cavaliers to reduce shedding. The hair between the pads of their feet grow long, but trimming is only personal preference. It will not harm the dogs at all to have any of their hair grow long. It’s usually preferred for the feathering on the ears, legs, tail, and feet to remain natural, although some people trim the feet for neatness’ sake. Others of us like the furry-footed hobbit look. The long hair between the pads of the feet in Cavalier Spaniels is referred to as “Slippers”.
